133 State Highway 4, Upokongaro, Wanganui
An old pa site clearly chosen for its defensive quality. There are interpretive panels on the hill top explaining the points of interest. Terraces and food storage pits are still evident. The consensus is that it was occupied about 200 years ago, around about the time of the arrival of Europeans, or a bit earlier.
It is a short walk up from the road, DOC have put a sign at the start of the track which helps.
A Pakeha landmark in this area worth noting is St Mary's Church Upokongaro.
