3 Blyth Street, Durie Hill, Durie Hill, Wanganui
A 200 metre tunnel into the hill and then an elevator takes you up Durie Hill. Like the Cable Car in Wellington the elevator was built by the developers of a hill suburb.
The War Memorial Tower at the summit is built of fossilised shell rock and, in fine weather, provides extensive views as far as Mt Taranaki-Egmont, Mt Ruapehu and the South Island. Architect Samuel Hurst Seager, planned Durie Hill Garden Suburb in 1920. According to the Historic Places Trust it is considered to be the first modern New Zealand suburb.
