Meremere Redoubt

In the war for the Waikato the Kingitanga (Maori King Movement) defences here were a formidable construction aimed at preventing the British advance. Whangamarino Redoubt to the south was used to bombard this strong position at long range with 4.75 inch Armstrong guns.
In October 1863 General Cameron out-flanked the position by using gunboats on the Waikato river. When he then came to mount an attack on Meremere he found the pa had been abandoned by the Maoris.
The British then built a an earthwork redoubt on the pa site.
