Upper Hutt Blockhouse

There was tension and fighting between Maori and Pakeha in the Hutt Valley in the 1840s, but the Upper Hutt Blockhouse, one of the country’s few structures that relate to the Land Wars, was built in 1860 at a time of renewed tension between Maori and Pakeha. It is a rare reminder that wars have been fought on New Zealand soil.
