1 Pihanga Road, Turangi-Waituhi Saddle, Taupo
Turangi calls itself the "trout fishing capital of the world" and if you want to find a fishing guide the visitor centre is a good place to start. The town is full of knowledgeable fishing folk and other interesting mountain and farming characters. The Visitor Centre includes a model of the impressive Tongairo Power scheme showing the aqueducts, and canals which divert water through to the power stations. Turangi has a groovy example of a Welcome Sign, with understated trout decorations, possibly in deference to the massive fish sculptures sported by Rakaia in Canterbury and Gore in Southland.
Turangi owes its existence to the building of the Tongariro Hydro Power Project.
