At exactly 1600m (or possibly a little more following recent uplift earthquakes) Mount Misery is not a climb for the faint-hearted. They might get miserable. Not far off the Lake Rotroa circuit, to get up Mount Misery, bring all your tramping skills and gear, and climb the track at head of the lake, which goes straight up. On the bushline you will climb onto the Mahanga range and up Mount Misery. There is a hut part way up. Fog is common in this area.
This tragically named peak actually has namesakes in the United Kingdom and United States and there is a mountain half the size in Northland, off the Waima Range Main Track, not often climbed. If you get up here and are not too miserable to take a photo, please, send it on in to us at NZPlaces.
