Abel Tasman Drive, Ligar Bay, Tasman
A monument to Abel Tasman is supplemented by interpretive panels telling of his visit to Aotearoa - New Zealand in December 1642. He called this place Murderer's Bay, losing four of his men in Europeans' first encounter with Maori, Ngati Tumakakokiri. If you find this of interest, see the diorama at the Golden Bay Museum in Takaka and The Prow also describes the event in detail, including raising possible misunderstandings to do with taniwha and kumara which may have introduced conflict into the meeting.
The memorial design was by E A Plischke.
In 1660 the World Map was edited to show the Coastline of New Zealand for the first time after Tasman's return to Europe.
