Albion Square

This historic precinct is the former home of the much loved and not so long ago lost Provincial Council buildings. From the 1850s until the 1870s the provincial council operated out of the grand buildings here, and they stood proud for another century until overtaken by rot and borer, Council demolishing them in 1968. A new courthouse was then built here and other government buildings had been constructed around the block, with the Police, Justice, and Conservation departments still in the vicinity.

What remains is a government and historic precinct, named Albion Square. Historic elements are a an old fire station, former trout hatchery, an old munitions store (possibly dating to the 1860s) and a survey chain test marker. These were used so surveyors and other property.
Also in the area and of historic note are Queens Gardens, the former Girls High School, a caretakers house, and a post box from 1862, believed to be the oldest one in continuous use.
