Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track

Southland Walks

The Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track is a 3 day loop walk that takes trampers along the south coast of New Zealand, up to the sub-alpine zone of the Hump Ridge, and over historic viaducts built in the heart of native forest. These were built by ambitious timber companies in the days of heavy logging of New Zealand's native bush.
Luckily for Hump Ridge, despite heavy investment, logging of this area never became viable.
The experience is run by the a Tuatapere Charitable Trust called Hump Ridge Track, and is not free to walk. This unique partnership is a first for DoC. The Trust runs two backcountry lodges in superb locations, each offer a stopping point along the walk.
There are several different levels of guided walk available including helicopter services for those not wanting to carry their own gear. In the winter it reverts to a standard DoC walk for those brave enough to test themselves against Antarctic conditions. Walkers are treated to classic Fiordland forest and lake vistas as well as the Southern Ocean, and Stewart Island. The highlight loop track over the Hump Ridge limestone formations is complemented by even more spectacular views
