52 Howden Street, Te Anau, Southland
This impressive and elegant heritage building has not always been on this site, but it has history nonetheless, and it also is exceedingly well built, and rich in New Zealand native timbers.
Actually the Catholic Convent from Nightcaps, Southland, some 100km away, the history of the Lodge goes back to the days of the formation of the convent, which was named St Joseph's. Southland's settlers were strongly Catholics in parts and the first group of Nuns arrived in the (then) province in 1850.
Nightcaps was the chosen base for the convent as it was a thriving mining town in the early 20th Century and there were many children to educate in Nun-run Catholic Schools. This impressive home for the sisters was completed in 1936, and served until the 1980s, when the mining was over and the convent closed.
Here in Te Anau the former St Joseph's sits upon a large plot and has been rebuilt and extended to play host to many guests, with the interior providing a warm and welcoming environment in a place where the outdoors are often not.
