A Department of Conservation Visitor Centre which is base for theFiordland National Park World Heritage Area.
The park achieved this status in 1986, recognition for outstanding natural geography. Now called Te Wahiponamu World Heritage Area, Mt Cook (Aoraki) and Westland National Parks joined in this World Heritage Status in 1990. The United Nations describes Te Wahipounamu as shaped by successive glaciations into fjords, rocky coasts, towering cliffs, lakes and waterfalls. It also mentions the pristine Beech and Podocarp forests and New Zealand Native birds the Takahe and the Kea.
The Visitor Centre at Te Anau is the usual entry point to the park where bookings can be made for the great walks; the Milford, Kepler and Routeburn Tracks. Visitor Centre Phone: (03) 249-7924.
