Cass

There is a railway line in a rather splendid alpine setting and not much else here but Cass is famous as the location for one of New Zealand's best known paintings, "Cass" by Rita Angus. The work was produced in 1936 when Angus was on a working holiday with Louise Henderson.

Actually, there are a few other buildings at Cass, and the area is technically named "Cass Settlement' and is divided into sections as it was supposed to become a town. Railway accommodation and engine sheds were put up around the turn of the century and some remain, along with one KiwiRail employee. To compensate for the obvious loneliness of the location, he holds an annual cricket match which brings hundreds of KiwiRail employees to him at Cass.
