Ohakune's existence is due to the railway and the station has been given Heritage status. It was an important staging post during the Main Trunk's construction at the start of the twentieth century.
After a quiet time the town has grown with the opening of the Turoa Ski field and more recently, a year round activity, the reinstatement of the Old Coach Road as a cycling/walking route. Interpretation panels along the road tell the story of this important transport route.
Close to the Station with views of the mountain is the Kings Hotel.
