National Park

National Park is not a prepossessing place. But if you are heading for Mount Ruapehu especially during the skiing season you may seek accommodation in the town. Originally built as a railway stop on the main Trunk National Park can be reached by the Northern Explorer rail service from Auckland or Wellington.
The station is now a café and restaurant. Also it is a place to hire bicycles.
