Lake Surprise Walk

Allow 5 hours for this return trip. Reaching Lake Surprise involves a climb from the Mangaturuturu River Valley. The track passes by a cascade flowing over smooth bedrock which is coated in white silica. This is a tramping track rather than a walk and participants should be prepared to travel across scree slopes and irregular ground. It is also necessary to ford the river.
