Mr Meacham's House - Pete's Dragon

The modesty of the second house on Western Road, belies it's star status, as the workshop of Mr Meacham (Robert Redford) in Disney's Pete's Dragon (2016).
From the road, the avid film buff can see the gentle hill that the town kids race their bicycles down and the workshop up the driveway where Mr Meacham first tells the tall tale of an enormous dragon. The doors from which his daughter Grace, (Bryce Dallas-Howard) who is park ranger, exits for work are the garage doors you see from the street.
For the filming of this early scene in the movie, sleepy Ngongotaha was converted into a Hollywood set for several days in April 2015. Dozens of vehicles parked in the town domain, and the disused Gantry cafe sprung to life as a cast and crew base. The curious children and teachers of Ngongotaha School sat in enforced silence on the other side of Western Road while crane size cameras arched over the road and the film rolled. Even local gangsters in low slung cars waited patiently at the stop/go while the stars (and some local kiwi talent) said their lines.
Then it was all back to normal.
