Skippers Road, Coronet Peak, Queenstown-Lakes
A great flood engulfs the Black Riders. The Shotover River where this scene was filmed is prone to flash floods, though not the magic variety of the film. In 1863, during the goldrushes in the area, floods swept away miners and their equipment. Queenstown tour companies will take you to Skippers Canyon (The road is not for the faint-hearted, and is out-of-bounds for rental vehicles). Rafting and jet-boating are popular adventure activities on the Shotover. The spectacular 90m long Skippers suspension bridge now leads no-where. It was built by the government in 1901 to access the Skippers gold-mining settlement and is New Zealand's highest suspension bridge. It has been used as a bungy jumping platform.
