21B Ramshaw Lane, Arrowtown, Queenstown-Lakes
There are so many great things about this gold fossicking area, it may inspire even the greenest amateur to give it a whirl. Firstly, Arrowtown, which is now a popular and well resourced tourist hub, was founded upon the river so the proximity is immediate.
There is a great carpark and some lovely picnic facilities right here as well as the Chinese Miner's Settlement for reflection and inspiration. Then the Arrow Gorge Track heads into the hills and the first kilometre is free for all for panning and sluicing using hand held boxes. The very reason the town was founded here was because this river was rich with gold and it will never all be gone, there may well be a flake with your name on it.
You may rent a gold pan from the Museum if you don't have your own, though the plastic ones are inexpensive.
