515-513 Mount Barker Road, Albert Town, Queenstown-Lakes
A scenic and interesting corner of the Wanaka High Country, with a farming history that dates back to the 1850s. Initially part of the larger Wanaka Station, the story goes that the first run manager took the job here, high in the mountains, to avoid the gold rush madness of the Central Otago Valleys at the time.
His peace and his luck ran out when the luck of prospectors discovered gold in the Criffel streams. The rush lasted 20 years and made many fortunes. Two massive water races were constructed and parts of these remain.
In the 1990s, the station was converted to deer farming, on a large scale. When the locals started asking to use the woolshed for functions, the Criffel owners began their turn towards tourism, now offering Quad Biking, Glamping, Station Tours, and Cottage Stays.
