208 Rhodes Road, Taitapu-Akaroa, Other
Otahuna was designed and built for Sir Robert Heaton Rhodes (1861-1956), a prominent Canterbury lawyer, runholder and politician. In 1891 he commissioned Christchurch architect Frederick Strouts (1834-1919) to design a grand country house in the Queen Anne style. It now has a Category I classification with the Historic Places Trust. The grounds of Otahuna Lodge are recognized as "A Garden of National Significance" by the New Zealand Gardens Trust. The Rhodes family were of such stature in Early Canterbury even the road to this landmark is named for them.
