Rutherford Building - Manchester University

Originally called the Physics Building, the Rutherford Building was where Rutherford ‘split the atom’ converting nitrogen atoms into oxygen atoms. He was here for 12 years before moving on to the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge. One of his team in Manchester was Ernest Marsden who later had a distinguished career in New Zealand as head of the DSIR (Department of Scientific and Industrial Research)

Something of the man Rutherford was and the prestige that he had when he was later at Cambridge is described here.
