110 Leven Street, Avenal, Invercargill, Other
This is the oldest and probably the prettiest of Invercargill's two substantial Nurse's Hostels. It used to be on the same block at Dee Street Hospital until Leven Street sliced the hospital grounds in half.
Until this Charles Brodrick Arts and Crafts buildingwent up in 1907, the nurses used to bunk in small rooms at the Hospital, which began in the 1860s and was one of New Zealand's first. The second wing of the nurses home was built in 1916, but the very slow move of medical services toward the other hospital location at Kew had begun then. There is another large brick accommodation house for nurses there, also no longer serving it's purpose.
This historic building has housed the Salvation Army for over 40 years, suiting their purposes perfectly.
Brodrick was a prolific Invercargill architect, also designing the Troopers Memorial, Alexandra Buildings, National Bank and the celebrated Masonic Centre.
