Bank of New Zealand Invercargill

At the beginning of the road to Bluff is the little brother to the two bigger banks of Invercargill's 'Bank Corner'.

All surrounding the Troopers Memorial, the banks are part of a plan for the intersection hatched in the 1880s by godfather architect F W Burwell. He also happens to have designed this building, in 1877. It was exceedingly grand and maybe a little small, leading to the need for significant alterations 1927, which added Art Deco elements to the design of E.R.Wilson, a later, but also prominent Invercargill architect.

Since the 1980s, the old BNZ has been home to an evangelist church, quite a different occupation to the other two banks which have found their new futures in retail. A lovely sketch of the building is at Te Ara, but NZPlaces would be pleased toe receive a photograph of the bank as it is today.

If you actually want to do some banking, the current branch of the BNZ is at 84 Esk Street.
