Trains in Limbo.
Sometimes visitors are upset at the sight of all the retired carriages and a few engines from Auckland's Metro train system sitting around behind Taumarunui Rail Station. The rail graveyard maybe a too poignant reminder that the town on the main trunk line has seen better days. The size of the old yards and the fact that they can accommodate over 100 units of left-over railstock are testament to the better days, when this was a bustling central stop on a busy North Island railway.
But the news is not all bad. Some of these units have been sold and owners are being sought for the rest. This is discussed in this Stuffarticle about Taumarunui from 2017.
Meantime the 'trunk line' is still operating a passenger service, and it still goes through Taumarunui.
