53 Hereford Street, Christchurch Central City, Christchurch, Other
A year before the earthquakes Christchurch City Council were quick to snap up and re-purpose the City's enormous former Postal centre when it became vacant. In a new model of public/Iwi ownership, the Council went halves with Ngai Tahu on the building, both parties agreeing to a high level of fitout. Achieving a six star Green rating, the offices are hailed as one of New Zealand's most environmentally sympathetic buildings. Post quake and working out of the City's art gallery, Council were quick to put their offices right, much to the chargrin of some quake affected residents on the other side of town, still struggling with roading and other service issues. Nevertheless, the CCC now cuts a striking figure in the post-quake landscape.
