Shandan Alley Memorial Museum

Other Museums

Shandan was the home of Rewi Alley, New Zealand born pioneer of Chinese industrial education, and his business partner, George Hogg. The pair ran techinical schools which later became the Bailie Oil Colleges, and led to a proliferation of tertiary education in provincial China.

Revered in this province, Hogg died an early death here, but Alley went on to Beijing to become a self-styled international liason man for the communist authorities. Both are buried in Shandan in a grand marble tomb complete with a security guard. Another bust of Alley is in the local cemetery.

Ther original Bailie school is here in the middle of Shandan and there is a statue of Alley there and another in the town. The museum is under construction and will house a massive collection of artefacts Alley himself amassed while living and working in the area.

There is also a Rewi Alley collection of Chinese Artefacts at the Canterbury Museum, which has recently been made digital.
