Influential New Zealander Rewi Alley and his business partner George Hogg were responsible for bringing industrial education to the provinces of Northwest China. The eventual evolution of their schools into the Bailie Oil Schools then led to the creation of Lanzhou University.
In 2017, they opened Rewi Alley Memorial Hall. Alley and Hogg are revered in this province.
Here in the circular plaza, called 'Bailie Square' that forms part of the University Town, is a bronze bust of Alley and there may be a small musuem to his works. To find the , follow the co-ordinates because the names and directions and descriptions are many and varied. There is a statue of Hogg a few blocks away, and another Alley tribute involving a mural and statue in a larger circular 'square' to the south, near the Shilidan Post Office.
