89 Greys Avenue, The Glen, Nelson City
The Greys Avenue flats are public housing designed by the Ministry of Works in the 'International Style' built to replace a purported slum. The first four (lower) blocks containing 50 units were built immediately after war the (1945-47); the project having been delayed from its initiation in 1941. Subsequently, 86 units were incorporated in a taller slimmer lighter block uphill.
In 2018 Housing New Zealand announced that the Greys Avenue block had reached the end of its useful life and would be demolished to be replaced by a new block with around 200 apartments.
