Tekapo Canal Road, Twizel-Lake Tekapo, Mackenzie
This scenic route offering expansive views of the McKenzie Country owes its existence to the ambitious hydro-electric scheme which harnesses the snow-derived waters of the MacKenzie Country lakes by using large man-made canals. Unfortunately the route is now closed to private cars but you can bike along it.
Tekapo B power station which discharges into Lake Pukaki is a short distance from the end of the road. Tekapo B was commissioned in 1977. Its 2 80MW(e) generators have an annual output of 833 GWh.
At an altitude of 677 metres, there is a unique salmon farm evolved from the first salmon farm in the world to operate in a hydroelectric canal system. At the farm you can feed the fish, catch your own salmon and buy salmon products. Sashimi, whole salmon, fillets and smoked salmon are available. In NZ, salmon farming focuses on Chinook salmon, also known as quinnat or king salmon. Young fish, or smolt, are reared in captivity for two or three years and are usually harvested at weights of 2-4 kilograms.
Ashley comments: Enjoyed salmon farm. Took nice photos of the lovely view. Saw the fish jumping which was very cool.
