One of New Zealand's earlier attempts at a multi-purpose Transport Hub, Waterloo Station, central to much of Lower Hutt, has park and ride, pedestrian subways and overbridges, arterial roads and most importantly integrated bus connections.
Though the name Waterloo might be a bit grand for this suburban location, it's function is right up there with Sydney's suburban hubs and this makes it a popular suburb to live in. The shopping centre is just across the road too.
Correctly known as a 'dual platform interchange', it has also been known as 'Hutt Central' this was actually a paddock and the end of the line until NaeNae opened in 1946, then it remained a simple station until a big upgrade in 1988 moved the interchange services from Woburn, which was hemmed in by houses. The big wide platforms are often windswept but it serves it's purpose as a linking station, and a stop on the Wairarapa Line.
