A 29km scenic walk and cycle path alongside the Hutt river provides access to the river for places to picnic, swimming, fishing and kayaking. Among the places where you can access the trail are the bridges across the river: Hutt Estuary, Ava Rail, Ewen, Melling, Kennedy-Good, Silverstream, Moonshine, Totara Park, Harcourt Park and Birchville bridges.
The Trail is continuous on the Eastern Bank but also in places runs along the Western side of the river.

If you want to go further the Trail is part of the Rimutaka Cycle Trail leading over the old railway incline past Lake Wairarapa to Ocean Beach. This takes 2-3 days for a distance of 115 kilometres.
