39 Riddlers Crescent, Petone, Korokoro, Lower Hutt City

Ratanui

In his day James Hector was the highest paid government servant. So the grandness of the house he built here for his family in 1882 is perhaps not surprising. The multi-gabled villa had 7 bedrooms and 8 other rooms and was highly decorated with decorative barge boards, ornamental finials and italianate-styled arch windows. It had a landscaped garden, tennis court and Summer House
The Hector family lived here until 1906.

More detail is given on the information boards on the site, which can be reached by walking along parallel to the motorway from Percy's Reserve and then climbing up to the plateau for the house site along what would have been the grand carriage drive.
