Haywards Sub Station

Transpower operates the National Electricity Grid. Haywards is one of the largest and most important of its substations, for it is where direct current power carried over a high voltage link from Benmore which includes the Cook Strait Cable is converted back to alternating current and fed into the North Island transmission network.

The building of the DC link was a significant technological achievement resulting only after much political debate as it means a significant proportion of the North Island's power, up to 40% at times, comes from the South Island.
