Fleming and Company Flour Mill

One big, white, hulking relic of an industrial behemoth that was. Still looming large on the rail and road in and out of Invercargill, the Flemings factory is an unavoidable reminder of Southlands horticultural heyday.

In 1877 the first timber flourmill went up here, pioneering industrialist and local politician Thomas Fleming at the helm. It did not survive a late 1880s fire, but the 1881 brick buildings did and still stand here today, along with over various additions from the 20th century. Flemings remains a household name in New Zealand, being a brand now, not the primary producer of oats and flour that it was. Other Flemings factoriesare dotted around Southland and Otago.

Just down the way is Invercargill's grand Basilica, creating quite a contrast with the old factory on the skyline in the otherwise lowrise city.

As always, NZPlaces would love some photos of this NZPlace.
