1224 Karaka Road, Anniversary Point, Hurunui
Built of limestone blocks in 1869, when the nearby Hurunui River was being bridged, the Hurunui Hotel is a gem of early New Zealand architecture.
The predecessor to this hotel was called 'Hasties' after the original landlord John Hastie. It was the southern anchor in a chain of six accommodation houses which covered the inland country between here and the 'Tophouse' at St Arnaud, the middle one being the Acheron Accommodation house. The three named were all cob buildings build by Mr Ned James and Tophouse survives intact to this day thanks to his fastidious craftsmanship
The Hurunui is the hotel that has managed hold one of the longest continuous licenses in New Zealand and still offered travellers refreshment and accommodation, until the 2016 Kaikoura Earthquake interrupted service. Repairs and reinstatement saw it back to full strength in 2019.
