Little Barrier, Hauraki Gulf Islands
New Zealand's first and most successful Department of Conservation Nature Reserve is Little Barrier Island. Since 1985 this gulf Island has been a reserve, dedicates to preservation of native plant and birdlife. Though cats and the pacific rat (kiore) were not eradicated until more recently, the island has served as an "ark" preserving many species threatened on the mainland, and providing populations for renewal of others.
It is important to note that visiting is restricted, however there are many reasons to seek permission to visit.
