306 Eastbourne Street East, Waihau-Patoka, Hastings
The Opera House is in a richly ornamented baroque interpretation of the Spanish Mission Style dating from 1915 and so anticipating what would become in vogue following the 1931 Hawkes Bay Earthquake. The architect was Henry Eli White. Some trimming of the tower roof overhangs occurred after the earthquake. The interior has Art Nouveau decoration.
Next door, the Hawke's Bay Municipal Buildings and Assembly provides a fitting complement. Dating from 1917, its architect was Albert Garnett.
Following closure in 2014 because it was deemed earthquake prone it was decided to upgrade and reopen the Opera House at a cost of $11 million. A detailed story can be found on the Opera House website.
