Blackball Mine Chimneys

For obvious reasons, Heritage New Zealand listed the two remaining chimneys of the Blackball Coal Mine. The rest of the mine is also still there, in various states of disrepair, as described in this DOC report, which also details some of the interesting Social History of the area, more about this is available at the Blackball Museum of Workingclass History.

Standing tall in the bush behind the town, the chimneys are constructed from bricks created at the Brunner Mine Industrial Site. One actually collapsed in 2014 but both remain protected. The other remnants of the mine including fan rooms and tunnel openings can provide great photography subjects depending upon the (notoriously foggy) weather.
