31 Awapuni Road, Gisborne, Gisborne
Gisborne may no longer be served by the national railway system but the spirit of rail is kept alive by the Gisborne City Vintage Railway.
Gisborne Railway Station is the terminus (apart from an extension to the port) of the original 'Motouhora' line running up the valley of the Waipaoa River. That line has been lifted, except for the last few kilometres into Gisborne, but the Palmerston N. to Gisborne Railway joins it within the city boundary and restored locomotive Wa165 operates on the 17 km stretch south to Muriwai.
Trips are operated entirely by volunteers; dates of public trips are advertised on the website and in the weekend supplement of the Gisborne Herald.
The engine shed is open to visitors on Saturday mornings (and is quite often open on several weekday mornings too).
