Unnamed Road, Te Hapua, Far North

Maukin's Nook

New Zealands coastline is littered with shipwrecks, charted and uncharted. This reportedly stunning little bay up at North Cape is the resting place of The 106 ton whaler Maukin, wrecked in a dramatic 1852 storm, only seven years after she was built in Auckland.

Ewan Stevenson, Archaehistoria, gives a fantastic first hand account of his search for the Maukin in this seldom visited bay, complete with pictures and the story of the storm which wrecked her. Despite no firm historical information as to where exactly the Maukin was placed, Stevenson manages to find the wreckage, though it has not yet been dived. He even finds some onshore detritus.

The Maukin's anchor is on display in the Far North Regional Museum in Kaitaia.
'Maukin' is a little used Scots or Gaelic term meaning 'hare', which also features in some Shakespeare.
