37 The Strand, Russell, Far North
Built in 1870 to a design by the Colonial Architect W.H. Clayton, the Custom House was needed as a base for monitoring and taxing the movement of goods in Russell, a port of entry then notorious for smuggling.
With its steep gables, shingled roof and verandahs it is one of the country’s finest colonial buildings. It serves as the town’s Police Station. Next door is another notable nineteenth century building, the Duke of Marlborough Hotel.
