333 State Highway 12, Opononi-Omapere, Far North
Beautiful Hokianga town
Omapere lies just inside the Hokianga harbour entrance, opposite the massive sand dunes on the harbour’s northern side. Just minutes before arriving in Omapere, if you have driven north through the Waipoua State Forest, drive into Signal Station Road.
At the end of the short road, a track to the right leads the site of the old Signal Station. From the station wooden discs were used to signal the sailing ships which channel to use for entering the harbour.
Another track, this one to the left, leads to Outer South Head, where the beach is a good spot for fishing and surfing. There are also rocks pools large enough to swim in Like nearby Opononi, Omapere is well provided with tourist facilities – motels, hotels, restaurants, fuel, boat hire, and of course excellent fishing and swimming beaches.
