Tupuwae Boulders

With the commercial boulder experience available in Wairere, and the Koutu Boulders on the other side of the Hokianga Harbour, there is a third option for boulder-spotting in Hokianga, if you can find it.

The local advice is to go, from Motukaraka, down Guest Road, or Matawera Road, to a sandy beach. There you will find boulders as big as three metres wide, and bigger than the famed Moeraki Boulders.

Here's the catch. Guest Road isn't on the map, neither is Tupuwae, and Matawera Road is a long and windy former forestry road which might end up on private property before it gets to a beach.
