47 Te Paki Stream Road, Cape Reinga, Far North
The Te Paki Stream is the northern access route used by tour buses between 90 Mile Beach and the road north to Cape Reinga. It offers access to spectacular sandhills to sled on or photograph. When driving along the stream you are warned not to stop your vehicle otherwise there is a risk of getting stuck in the sand. There are several options for walkers in this area, all well signposted by DoC. One is a3-4 day easy coastal tramp. Far North tour operators Ahikaa Adventures keep a brightly painted truck at the end of this road, renting out sandboards and sharing information with tourists.
This is Ngati Kuri rohe (area) and they are famously protective over their assets.
GNS considers the sand dunes here a GEOTRIP because the formation of the dunes is the result of an chain of geological and weather processes which have taken place over the past million years and continue today.
