A surprisingly sophisticated city fringe park is upon the banks of the Leith not far from the University Precinct.
Forethought was a big factor in the reservation of this large wooded space as a park in 1895, and now it is one of the city's oldest. The clubs that have made their homes here are for croquet and bowling. There is a nice children's playground, with a paddling pool and BBQ facilities, and deeper into the bush a very impressive glow worm dell. You may choose to take the tour of that. There are paths and a pretty pond. For DOC this is a Kiwi Guardians site, but Dunedin City Council own the park, which is part of the town belt and home to some of Dunedin's tallest trees.
At the entrance is the attractive 1903 George Street Bridge, and just outside the park on the corner of Malvern and Woodhaugh Streets is the 1882 Woodhaugh Hotel.
