Hydro Esplanade St Clair

St Clair's Hydro Esplanade Hotel is coming up to her 100th birthday and what a century it has been. This square suburban hotel rose and fell with her surroundings, not just the wild tides of St Clair but the fortunes of the city. Humming as a hotel, grafting as a tearooms, graciously hosting all sorts of tenants in upstairs flats and the surf shop downstairs, the current owners have recreated the original dream. The downstairs cafe which looks eternally east to the sea is now topped by stylish short stay apartments, which are very highly reviewed. You cannot get more St Clair than this.

The baths are down the road, and there's plenty to see and surf on the doorstep.
