600 Blueskin Road, Orokonui-Port Chalmers, Dunedin City
20 minutes north of Dunedin you will find the 307 hectare Orokonui Eco-sanctuary, modelled on that at Kaori. It is home to some fascinating and rare wildlife including kaka, jewelled gecko, tui, rifleman, brown creeper, bellbird, kereru, fern bird, grey warbler and fantail. With the pest proof fence this safe haven 'provides visitors with an exceptional experience while allowing our native flora and fauna to live naturally in this protected habitat'. Orokonui Ecosanctuary offers visitors both guided tours and unguided walking.
The Orokonui Ecosanctuary is accessed via an architecturally distinguished visitor centre. Architectural Ecology were the architects.
TRANSPORT: Get to the sanctuary by car or take advantage of a rail excursion from Headfirst travel known as the Orokonui Express. This includes a 60 min guided tour of the sanctuary.
