An exciting, new part of Discovery World - for adults as well as children - is the tropical forest, home to over 500 species of butterflies and moths. The forest has over 100 species of tropical shrubs and plants and is also home to turtles, fish and tarantulas.. You can also see the whole lifecycle of the butterflies with caterpillars hatching in the Breeding Room. Temperature about 28 degrees
The museum's guided tours can be pre-booked. Architect David Ross was responsible for the design of the original building opened in 1877. Its Classical Greek design was based on the Cambridge Museum of Natural History. Subsequently further wings were added including one designed by Edmund Anscombe. A major redevelopment opened in the year 2000 incorporating a central atrium with skylight was designed by local architect Ted McCoy. The building has an Historic Places Category I rating.
