Te Wepu - Merivale Manor

Te Wepu means 'The Webbs' and that's who this grand home was built for in 1882. Henry Richard Webb was a prolific immigrant from New South Wales who became involved in business and politics in Canterbury and this home was built near his wife's family here in Merivale.

It proved too big for a family home once the Webbs moved on and spent nearly a century as a boarding house and then flats, becoming affectionately known as the Papanui Palace, playing temporary home to hundreds over the years. In 1952 brick bungalow was built upon the front yard. After extended planning and discussions, Merivale Manor was thoroughly restored and updated, the brick house removed, the drive lined with motel units and the complex opened in 2005.

If the walls could talk, the stories would not all be genteel but the finished result is very much so. Several elegant suites to choose from, or enjoy the locale and environment from one of the units.
