First Church of Christ Scientist Christchurch

The Christian Science movement has chosen some special locations and architects to advance the cause of their church in New Zealand Cities. The Christchurch branch is no exception. The setting on the banks of the river by Hagley Park, backed by stately and statuesque native and introduced trees is picturesque, while still receiving high exposure from Carton Mill Road. The postmodern building by Warren and Mahoney (1989) is a head turner. It features barrel vaulted ceilings and a wide courtyard in front.

Recently the attached reading room received an upgrade, adding Mondriaan-esque decor inside and out and announcing it's status as open to the public.
